Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay: The German partner banks

Apple Pay and Google Pay have been available in Germany for almost two years and with Samsung Pay a third major protagonist is now starting. Since the launch in 2018, the number of partner banks at both Google and Apple has grown continuously, so that the coverage of participating banks in Germany is now impressive. In total, there are over 50 banks in Germany that mainly rely on Google and Apple Pay.

Mobile Payment in Germany: Growth through Corona?

“There is hardly any other behavioral pattern that has been changed by Corona to the same extent as payment at the cash register,” states Bitkom President Achim Berg. Accordingly, this behavior naturally also applies to the use of mobile payment methods as they are offered by Google and Apple. Even if there are no exact figures, it can be assumed that mobile or multichannel payment methods are also increasing in use. Arnulf Keese, CDO of DKB, said at the Banking Exchange 2020 in June 2020 that the corona pandemic has catapulted us in Germany five years into the future when it comes to mobile payments.

Which banks participate in Google and Apple Pay

The Klarna Bargeld Index shows that cash is becoming less and less important, especially for a younger target group, and that card payments are increasing accordingly. It is therefore not surprising that this target group in particular has a high affinity for mobile payment methods such as Apple or Google. This makes the partner bank all the more important, because if a bank does not support a payment method, the attractiveness of the payment method decreases among users. In the meantime the coverage of the partner banks in Germany is expandable but a large number of banks support one or both payment methods.
